New European directive for radio equipment

The Radio Equipment Directive (RED) - 2014/53/EU has been published by the European Commission in the Official Journal L 153 dated 22 May 2014, and will replace the present Radio & Telecommunication Terminal Equipment (RTTE) Directive

The Radio Equipment Directive (RED) - 2014/53/EU has been published by the European Commission in the Official Journal L 153 dated 22 May 2014, and will replace the present Radio & Telecommunication Terminal Equipment (RTTE) Directive. The new Directive shall be applicable from 13 June 2014 and must be implemented by the EU/EEA member states by 13 June 2016, at which time the current RTTE Directive will be repealed.
Radio equipment complying with the RTTE Directive can be placed on the market for one additional year, i.e. until 13 June 2017.

Some features of the new Directive:  

  • Terminal equipment without radio interface is excluded (while covered by the Low Voltage- and EMC Directives).
  • Importers and distributors have legal responsibilities and duties.
  • Mobile phones must be compatible with universal chargers.
