An IEC standard for skin care beauty appliances has recently been published, IEC 60335-2-115:2021. This mandatory safety standard is not country-specific; however, it will be implemented in all countries that are members of the International Electrotechnical Commission for Electrical Equipment (IECEE).
A number of electric appliances related to skincare and beauty, intended for both household and commercial use, with their rated voltage not exceeding 250 V, will be required to adhere to these new requirements. Examples of these types of products include:
● Battery-operated appliances
● DC-supplied appliances
● Appliances utilizing high, medium, and low frequency outputs
● Epilators
● Vacuum-pressured appliances
● Wax melting appliances
● Appliances having surface cooling effect on the skin
● Facial cleaning appliances
● Micro-needling appliances
● Plasma pens, etc.
This new standard addresses the common hazards that are present when users operate such kind of appliances.
For many years, these appliances have been present on the market without any appropriate standards to measure their operational safety levels. With the introduction of this new standard, re-testing and re-certification efforts are required for beauty care appliance manufacturers. Those who fail to demonstrate compliance and certification will experience difficulty getting their product to market successfully.
