Launching ecodesign service

                                                                                                                                                                                       

The proposed new European Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation as published earlier this year builds on the existing Ecodesign Directive.

Ecodesign requirements for specific product groups shall be set to improve their circularity, energy performance and other environmental sustainability aspects, and concern most product categories.

A wide range of requirements are considered, such as:

• Product durability, reusability, upgradability and reparability
• Presence of substances that inhibit circularity
• Energy and resource efficiency
• Recycled content
• Carbon and environmental footprints

A proposed new “Digital Product Passport” shall help to make informed choices when purchasing products, facilitate repairs and recycling, improve transparency about products’ life cycle impacts on the environment, and also help public authorities for checks and controls.

It is predicted that by 2030, primary energy savings can correspond roughly to 150 billion cubic meters of natural gas (almost equivalent to EU’s total import of Russian gas).

So, the legislation and the green shift will require documentation on sustainability and environmental impacts, and self-declared performance in this context will not be acceptable from 2024.

Furthermore, apart from the regulatory prospects, the following facts call for urgency in dealing with ecodesign:

• Manufacturers will face material shortages due to restrictions on exports between regions
• Political situations have led to sharp price increases for energy and transport.
• Climate changes causing extreme weather will greatly worsen the situation.

With this background, Nemko has on 1 October launched an Ecodesign Service to assist manufacturers and designers to comply. The service is applicable to all sectors where products and/or services are designed or redesigned.
