EU ETSI releases harmonized standard for 5 GHz WAS/RLAN
Written by: Lars Hjerpseth
On November 25, 2024, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) released the updated Harmonized European Standard ETSI EN 301 893 V2.2.1. This version specifically regulates the use of the 5 GHz frequency band for Wireless Access Systems (WAS), including wireless local area networks (WLANs) and devices that use ad-hoc networking.
These new regulations are expected to come into effect by August 31, 2025.
With the rising demand for wireless connectivity, ETSI EN 301 893 V2.2.1 aims to standardize spectrum usage across Europe, ensuring efficient operation of wireless devices while reducing interference. This is essential to support modern technologies like smart homes, IoT, and large-scale WLANs.
The updated standard covers both fixed and dynamic wireless systems, such as ad-hoc networks, which are often used for temporary setups like events or emergency responses.
Key Changes
- Efficient Spectrum Use: Optimizes the 5 GHz band, balancing device performance and reducing interference.
- Harmonization Across Europe: Aligns regulations to foster market interoperability and easier market entry.
- Technological Inclusivity: Supports a wide range of technologies, making it easy for both old and new systems to comply.
To comply with this new standard, manufacturers must demonstrate conformance to Directive 2014/53/EU, which governs the harmonization of laws regarding the availability of radio equipment on the market. This includes preparing a technical file that proves compliance with the standard and submitting an updated EU self-declaration of conformity.
If wireless equipment does not meet the requirements, it may be removed from the market.
ETSI EN 301 893 V2.2.1 is key for shaping the future of wireless connectivity. Manufacturers, network providers, and developers must ensure their products comply to enter the European market. The standard also aids in global alignment, helping European innovations reach international markets.
This release represents a significant step toward a stronger, more efficient wireless ecosystem in Europe. ETSI EN 301 893 V2.2.1 not only supports ongoing technological advancements but also strengthens the region’s commitment to seamless, interference-free connectivity. For industry stakeholders, it provides an opportunity to innovate while adhering to rigorous regulatory standards, marking a key moment in the evolution of wireless technology.
