Key Changes in Lighting Product Safety Standard EN IEC 60598-2-1:2021

On 7 November 2021, EN IEC 60598-2-1:2021 will replace EN 60598-2-1:1989 . This mandatory safety requirement will affect all fixed general-purpose luminaires for use with electric light sources on voltages that do not exceed 1000 V.

However, the Date of Withdrawal (DOW) for EN 60598-2-1:1989 will not occur until May 2024, at which time the previous standard, EN 60598-2-1:1989 will become invalid. Since electrical equipment in compliance with a harmonized European Standard (EN) is presumed to be in conformity with the corresponding requirements set in harmonized legislation, manufacturers must update their required files in accordance with each IECEE country individually.

If this new standard is not observed, the manufacturer risks losing CE conformity certification and in turn, cannot bring their product to market which will incur international ramifications.

    Understanding EN IEC 60598-2-1:2021

This definitive safety standard for luminaires specifies the essential electrical safety and performance requirements necessary for all types of fixed electrical luminaires in regard to their design, construction, testing and overall performance. This standard contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 11, which is to make cities and communities safe and resilient, particularly in regard to luminaire safety.

Important changes to understand in this new edition of the standard are as follows:

    • Updated marking requirements
    • New and updated constructional requirements for manufacturers
    • New electric and magnet field (EMF) requirements
    • New blue light hazard evaluation
    • New requirements for Power over Ethernet (PoE) systems
    • New and updated testing procedures for DC electric strength testing, leakage current testing, gland torque testing, and tumbling testing
