ECHA Adds a New Hazardous Chemical to the Candidate List

As of November 7, 2024 European Chemicals Agency’s (ECHA Member) State Committee confirmed the addition of triphenyl phosphate (TPP) to The Candidate List of substances of very high concern (SVHC).

The substance is used as a flame retardant and plasticiser and has been shown to disrupt hormones. TPP can be found in various products, such as foam for upholstered furniture, children's items, electronics, certain nail polishes, and as a plastic additive.

The specifications of this notice are as follows:

    • Importers and manufacturers must notify ECHA within six months if their products include a substance that is on the Candidate List.
    • Consumers can ask suppliers if the products they’re buying contain substances of very high concern (SVHCs).
    • Suppliers in the EU and EEA must also update their safety data sheets for substances on the Candidate List, whether they supply the substance directly or use it in mixtures.

The Candidate List of SVHCs now includes 242 substances. Under REACH, companies must comply with these legal requirements if their substance is added to the Candidate List—whether on its own, in mixtures, or in products. REACH is designed to protect the health and wellbeing of humans and the environment.
