China MIIT Issues Notice No. 181 on Automotive Radar Radio Management.

In late 2021, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in cooperation with the State Radio Regulation of China (SRRC) released Notice No. 181, which outlines temporary regulations regarding vehicle radar radio management. In order to receive market approval in China, an SRRC certification must be issued for manufacturers and importers of radio transmitter products of any form.
There are three main operating frequency bands for automotive millimeter-wave radars: 24 GHz, 77 GHz, and 79GHz. Now, type approval applications for radio equipment for automotive radars must be within the 76 GHz to 79 GHz band. As of March 1, 2022, the MIIT’s radio management office will not approve or accept model applications for automotive radar radio transmitters from 24.25 GHz to 26.65 GHz.
These interim provision aims to further develop and apply Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving technologies, which points out that when automotive radars have been used within the 76-79 GHz frequency range, there is an increased ability for anti-collision, blind-spot detection, lane merging and parking assistance, and pedestrian detection.
In order to receive approval, a variety of tests must be conducted in an accredited testing laboratory that has been recognized by the MIIT. An important part of certification testing includes the determination of core parameters of the radio equipment, including the following: frequency, frequency band, frequency tolerance, transmission power, occupied bandwidth, and the parameters of the frequency spectrum (i.e., as out-of-band emissions). Manufacturers and importers who fail to comply with this change risk products being withdrawn from or being denied access to the Chinese market.
